A cluttered bedroom just doesn’t hit the same as a peaceful one. Just ask me! I have a pretty small bedroom so careful organizing is a must!

But for a while (longer than I’d like to admit, I was stepping over laundry and dodging piles of things I had sorted to organize. It wasn’t exactly giving cozy retreat. More like chaotic sleepover camp… for adults.

But let me tell you – when I finally got my bedroom in order, everything else felt a little easier too. There’s something about waking up in a clean, calming space at the end of the day that changes your whole mindset. Now, I actually enjoy going into my bedroom.

So let’s talk about it. Let me help you with some simple, doable ways to organize your bedroom without having to turn it into a Pinterest-perfect showroom – unless you’re into that sort of thing (okay, I kinda am).

But hey, no judgment here, and we’re talking practical everyday solutions that can just help you clear your space.

Use the Space Under Your Bed Like a Storage Ninja

If you’re not using the area under your bed for storage, you’re missing a golden opportunity. That space is basically a hidden attic for people who hate attics. Whether it’s rolling bins, flat zippered bags, or even drawers if your bedframe allows, this is a great spot for off-season clothes, extra bedding, or the 17 throw pillows you swear you’ll need again someday.

Tip: Go with clear containers or label them (I do both) so you’re not playing Guess That Sweater when cold weather hits. That’s what I actually use because I don’t have a super tall bed frame, and I love them. You can slide these babies under every bed in your house and practically store everything you own – especially clothing items.

Make Friends with Baskets (and Use Them Everywhere)

Baskets are like the jeans of home decor – there’s a style for everyone, and they go with everything. I use them on shelves, in closets, under benches, and even as catch-alls beside the bed.

A woven basket can hide all kinds of chaos and still look cute doing it. Remote controls, charging cords, socks that only come in singles—you name it, a basket can wrangle it.

And let’s be real, if it’s easy to toss something into a basket, we’re all more likely to actually put it away.

Think Vertical—Especially If You’re Tight on Space

When floor space is limited, look up. No, seriously. Vertical storage can be a game-changer. Wall-mounted shelves, tall bookcases, or even a few well-placed hooks can take the pressure off your nightstands and dressers.

I’ve seen folks hang everything from hats to handbags to necklaces on decorative hooks, and it turns into part of the room’s aesthetic.

Bonus: If your nightstand is always cluttered, try mounting a narrow shelf above it. You can use put small baskets or bins on it to keep essentials within reach but frees up that valuable surface space for prettier things. Like, say, your iced coffee or a little vase of grocery store flowers.

Make Better Use of Your Closet Space

So, I’m sure you’ve seen or used over-the-door shoe racks. That’s nothing ground-breaking. BUT you don’t have to use them for shoes if you don’t need to. I personally don’t have that many shoes that I wear all year, and I can store out of season shoes in my under-the-bed boxes.

So, a better use of a lot of those little spaces can be things like lotions, jewelry, or even underwear or other clothing if you get the organizers with larger compartments.

I have a friend who uses one in her hall closet and labels it. She has everything from medication to craft scissors in it and it works so well! Nobody says you have to keep bedroom stuff in your bedroom. If you have a small house like me, I have to get creative with storage in all my rooms!

Give Your Closet a Mini Makeover

Closet space is often the biggest headache in any bedroom. But sometimes it’s not about needing more space—it’s about using it better.

Start by editing your clothes. ( I know. This part stings a little.) Then, rethink your closet layout. Double up your hanging rods, add a small dresser inside the closet, or pop a shelf up high to hold off-season shoes or sentimental stuff you just can’t part with yet. Command hooks are also great for adding extra storage without committing to holes in the wall.

And if it still feels chaotic, try color-coding your wardrobe. It might sound excessive, but it makes picking outfits feel easier—plus it just looks so dang satisfying. Full disclosure – I’ve never actually done this, but I love it when I see other people do it!

Rethink the Dresser Situation

Not everyone needs a giant, six-drawer dresser that takes up half the room. Depending on your needs, a smaller dresser combined with hanging space and under-bed storage might be more efficient—and visually lighter. You can even swap it for a cabinet or armoire if you want more flexibility.

One thing I learned the hard way: drawers are only helpful if they’re actually functional. If yours are so full you have to wrestle them open, it’s time to purge, organize, and possibly roll your clothes Marie Kondo–style. (I was skeptical too, but dang if it doesn’t save space.)

Create a Catch-All Zone… On Purpose

Let’s just accept the fact that we’re going to have clutter sometimes. Life happens. But I try to tame it by creating a small “landing zone” for the things I usually toss on the bed, floor, or dresser.

This could be a tray on the nightstand for jewelry and hair ties, a pretty bowl on the dresser for pocket change, or even a bench at the foot of the bed that holds tomorrow’s outfit. Think of it as a designated mess zone—except it’s not really messy. It’s smart.

For me, I don’t love the clutter of little trinket dishes and whatnot, so I use cute baskets or bins, and ALWAYS go for square or rectangular shapes. To me, little round bowls can add to the cluttered look I hate. But again, that’s just me! You do you.

Don’t Forget the Nightstands

Nightstands are basically the kitchen junk drawer of the bedroom. It’s where we stash lotion, chargers, books, earbuds, and the chapstick we panic about at 2am. But just because it’s a catch-all doesn’t mean it has to be a disaster zone.

Try giving each drawer or shelf a purpose—like tech stuff in one section, reading material in another, and self-care goodies in a third. Use small containers or dividers to keep things from turning into a black hole. And if you’re short on drawer space, add a decorative box or tray on top to at least corral the clutter.

Make Your Bed Every Day (Yes, Really)

I know. This one seems unrelated. But making your bed every morning sets the tone and instantly makes the whole room feel cleaner—even if it’s not. It’s like putting on lipstick when you don’t have time for full makeup. You still feel pulled together.

And hey, if you’ve gone to the trouble of organizing your whole bedroom, you might as well give it the finishing touch, right?

Ready to Reclaim Your Space?

Your bedroom doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to work for you. And once it’s set up in a way that feels peaceful, cozy, and (dare I say) pretty, you’ll be surprised how much it affects your day. So go ahead and tackle one small corner at a time. Before you know it, your bedroom will be less stress zone, more safe haven.

Because you deserve a space that feels like an exhale.
